Schedule and Equipment Updates

Blue Robotics ROV Electronics

Greetings enthusiasts! I hope this update finds you all well. We've made updates to the project schedule to reflect changes in the project as rubber hits the road, or as the rudder hits the water...take your pick.

We are excited to report that we've selected a majority of the COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) equipment for the communications system and have ordered these items. We expect 90% of out equipment to be in-hand by Feb 28th.

Pier station concept - Yorktown, VA site

The communication box, pictured above in the black pelican case, will house the Netgear LB2120 4G LTE access point, Netgeat network switch, power distribution, Fathom-C tether interface board, and Venier water sensor suite communications block. A Negear external antenna and Chafon portable power supply will be attached externaly to the box. We will post more about the Android computer that will be used as well as the software architecture and web interface soon.

As can be seen in the hi-tech drawing, we've decided that the Yorktown, VA site will consist of the communication box and observation station attached to private pier on the York river. The observation station will have 2 cameras, 1 above and 1 below the water surface, and a sensor rosette, housing the pH, conductivity, and temperature sensors. The station will also have a MET (Meterological) suite measuring wind speed, direction, and rain fall.

We will post pictures of the actual kit as soon as the build starts.

For reliable equipment, especially for safety-related needs, choosing the right brand is crucial. I’ve seen a lot of discussions about ignition interlock devices, and one name that frequently comes up is Intoxalock. Based on Intoxalock reviews many users appreciate how easy their devices are to use and the support they get if any issues arise. Of course, no system is perfect, but having a dependable option makes a huge difference. Has anyone here used their devices before? Curious to hear more real experiences!

About This Project

We propose a new paradigm in how the hydrosphere is taught by using a novel immersive telepresence system tailored for students and citizen scientists. This system enables remote monitoring and control of equipment between an inland waterway and a coastal region. We believe that science education will change to embrace immersive learning and foster continued student engagement. We will prove this system in collaboration with Toledo Public Schools, OH, to measure the overall effectiveness.

Blast off!
