THANK YOU!!

To all,

Thanks to all of you we have reached our target of $50,000!!

We are awed by the number of like-minded individuals from across the globe and around the world who have rallied to support our research. We are also heartened by the efforts of so many of you to go beyond the call to insure our success. The process of obtaining funding in this manner of crowd-sourcing is very different from applying to the NIH, for example. The latter is a great institution, once greater in my view, but is now under-funded. I believe that this biases the organization to move away from supporting innovative or truly new research.

The process of funding through large organizations is also so often highly impersonal. This contrasts dramatically with the process that we have just shared. I have been utterly amazed at how engaged all of the contributors have been, and how the comments and questions have been genuinely challenging and important to answer honestly. Richard and I believe that science needs to be truthful. That is to say that we should say what we know but also what we don't know.

We have all shared in a dialog that has enriched us and hope has done the same for everyone who has participated.

Gene and Richard

We've felt the same way--the process is so much more rewarding than the impersonal grant manner of doing things. We can have real conversations and exchanges of ideas. Thank you!! Gene and Richard

So pleased that the free market has supplied your research with financing the federal government failed to provide. I wish my tax dollars went towards this too! My mother has 4 different types of cancer, and has never experienced a keto day in her life. I live a ketogenic lifestyle in hopes of avoid repeating her gene expressions. Maybe when I'm her age in 25 years, a new paradigm will have taken hold, thanks to intrepid, curious, and intelligent researchers like you, Gene and Richard.

Alexandra, in fairness, nobody quite realized all of this during our parents' generations. Of course, also in fairness (and with 20/20 hindsight) the biochemistry wasn't any different then and we all SHOULD have realized. But I didn't. Richard didn't. There were pioneers who knew something special about ketosis. Steve Phinney fought this battle almost alone 35 years ago. Jeff Volek likewise for about 20 years. But the full measure of the low fat folly didn't really hit until the last 10-15 years and now we all belong to the growing community of people who say 'Ah HAH!!" Thank you, thank you, thank you! We're trying hard to figure our something better. Gene and Richard

Awesome, congrats! I've been doing strict keto for years, with the decent possibility of cancer inhibition being one of my primary reasons (aside from the more obvious general physical and mental health benefits); excited to finally have some serious effort go into validating that idea.

Ryan, you're walking the walk. It's not so easy to sustain a strict keto diet, so congratulations on that. We don't know for sure about anything, but we do believe the rationale is there. Gene and Richard

Richard and I are immensely grateful for your support, not just financially (necessary though that may be) but also for your truly essential understanding of what we're trying to do. We have tried to be honest about what it is that we know and what we really don't know. This is a critical feature of science. It's not so easy to sustain an honest (with oneself) perspective all the time. The battle is often with getting attached to a desired outcome. That has to be fought over and over. Anyway, Thank you again. We fight on. Gene and Richard

Hopefully the power of the people will continue to help change the current paradigm on cancer treatment. The Max Planck quote, "A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it. I hope not...I want to be around when light is finally shown on "the truth we've been tripping over." I am also proud to be a supporter. :)

Thank you profoundly. Richard and I are both only too aware of the poignancy of this particular quote. We too want to see this light. Gene

Congratulations, I'm so happy to be a backer although as I have cancer & am using ketogenic diet as part of my protocol, I am clearly partial. I really enjoy getting the updates. Is there some way we can share these via Facebook? There are others interested and who may help with funding for future projects.

Dear Brice, I don't do Facebook at all, but I find myself out of many loops as a result. On the other hand, emails can get very cumbersome for mass mailings of anything with data, attachments, photos, figures, charts, etc. (limits on sizes, etc.). We're still working a lot of things out. Thank you so much for your support. Gene and Richard

About This Project

We've identified that ketone bodies, i.e. fuels in the bloodstream that result from a very low carbohydrate diet, metabolically inhibit growth of 7 cancer cell lines in cell culture, but not 3 normal cell types. Future cancer treatments using diet could become more effective and less toxic. We recently posted this project on Experiment requesting funds for supplies. We need salary for our superb technologist, as the NIH has not funded us, as they are committed to drug therapies.

Blast off!
