Seeking Participants!

We are looking for participants in whose home we will sample. You will have the opportunity to learn more about the air quality in your own home while you help your neighborhood collect local data regarding potentially dangerous contaminants. We hope to use this data to identify potential issues and changes that would improve homeowners' and neighborhood-wide health. If you are selected to participate, you will be provided with an air quality test kit allowing you to run the tests in your home, with assistance from project coordinators.

Sampling Locations: Based on public records of PCE/PERC contamination and input from community members we have selected two target locations in the TNH2H neighborhoods to sample around. See the map above. We would like to recruit participants from both our target area (the small red area outlined in black) and from throughout the rest of the community (the five neighborhoods also shown on the map).

More Info on Participating:

  • We would prefer homes where there is no smoking indoors.
  • We would ask that you do not bring dry cleaning into your home during testing.
  • The devices are small and rely on passive diffusion. This means the sampling devices are placed in your home (on the lowest level that is used regularly) and absorb contaminants over time, so there are no pumps or noisy equipment.
  • Testing will take 17 – 28 days
  • There are two phases of testing: (phase 1) for radon, and (phase 2) for PCE/PERC/PERC
    • Phase 1: 3 – 7 days. You choose the start and stop times. "Closed home conditions" are required. (Windows must be closed; window fans and AC units cannot be used; central air however is OK)
    • Phase 2: 14 – 21 days. You choose the start and stop times. Closed home conditions are not required
  • Project coordinators will be available to help set up and end tests
  • In addition to the sampling devices, the kit will include a consent form, data sheets, and a short survey.

About This Project

The harmful effects of indoor air contaminants, such as perchloroethylene (PERC), are clear. Knowing how to assess our own risk is less clear. We will assemble and distribute air quality test kits to homes in Northeast Denver in order to collect data on two pollutants: PERC and radon. Our goals are simple, help a local community understand if they are at risk, raise awareness of air quality issues, and test a low-cost method for PERC detection that could allow anyone to screen their home.

Blast off!
