Sensor Selections

Early sensor electronics buoy housing concept

Greetings enthusiasts!

We hope this finds you all well. We've selected our water quality sensor suite for our sites. Five sensors have been ordered.

We will be using Vernier as our sensor manufacturer for the water quality measurements. We've selected pH, salinity, temperature, dissolved O2, and nitrate as the sensor suite for the tow platforms.

These sensors will be deployed during platform operation and supply real-time data to the students. We will also be using the LabQuest Stream as the sensor data acquisition interface.

This inter face will allow us to collect data and simultaneously visualize the data during operation. We are currently designing for the interface to be connected via a tether to the shore/pier side computer. However, we are also considering having an on-board system with a yet to be determined power supply that would allow for the buoy to continue to collect data while the main communications system is unattached. More on this later.

More updates coming! Stay tuned and keep exploring!

About This Project

We propose a new paradigm in how the hydrosphere is taught by using a novel immersive telepresence system tailored for students and citizen scientists. This system enables remote monitoring and control of equipment between an inland waterway and a coastal region. We believe that science education will change to embrace immersive learning and foster continued student engagement. We will prove this system in collaboration with Toledo Public Schools, OH, to measure the overall effectiveness.

Blast off!
