A little Legendary History about Waldrapp Ibis

According to local legend in Turkey, the Northern Bald Ibis (Waldrapp) was one of the first birds released from the Ark by Noah as a symbol of fertility. These religious traditions have helped this species survive in Turkey long after the species had disappeared from its range in Europe. There was a belief as well, that the Waldrapp migrated each year to guide Hajj Pilgrims to Mecca, and a festival was held to celebrate its return.

Northern Bald Ibis Hieroglyph Rendering

Ibis, in general, are revered as holy birds in Ancient Egypt as embodiments of Thoth, scribe of the gods. The Old Egyptian word "akh" (to be resplendant, shine), was denoted in hieroglyphs as a bald ibis.

About This Project

The purpose of this study is to create a standardized framework for evaluation of ulcerative dermatitis in Waldrapp ibis, with the ultimate goal of discovering the root cause of this condition in captive populations. This will be accomplished using a structured, multi-factorial approach that includes thorough analysis of skin biopsies, serology and husbandry. This research is supported by the Waldrapp Ibis SSP.
