Myanmar Elephant Healthcare Workshop

We have an exciting training experience planned in Myanmar February 16th - 18th. We have elephant experts from the Myanmar Timber Enterprise, University of California Davis, The Houston Zoo, The Oregon Zoo, Wildlife Reserves Singapore, The Smithsonian, and Worldwide Veterinary Services joining together to provide hands-on training and share knowledge with the elephant veterinarians of Myanmar.

Topics to be covered include performing CBC differentials, EEHV diagnostics and clinical management, endocrinology topics related to elephant stress and welfare, and more! We have learned that 45 Myanmar veterinarians will be in attendance for this workshop.

Thank you all for your support of this work! We have just a few days remaining on our campaign (It ends Thursday February 6th at midnight), so please spread the word. As you know, this platform is an all or nothing funding event, so we need to reach our goal by Thursday!

About This Project

Elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus hemorrhagic disease (EEHV-HD) is the leading cause of death of young Asian elephants in the west, and suspected to occur in Myanmar. To validate if alternative methods can be used for the detection of EEHV, we will collect noninvasive samples from 2 captive and one wild elephant herd and determine the presence of EEHV using qPCR. To advance the study of EEHV epidemiology in Myanmar, we will conduct training for 25 Myanmar veterinarians.
