Week Three in The Zone

Today we started the third and final week of research in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. A greater percentage of captured dogs are coming in with RF-ID's from last year so I think we are near the end. Most new animals have been treated and I think we are nearing 100% saturation with only a few particularly wild and wary animals escaping our attention. So all is well.

The students are getting things done and are having a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The ability to help in such a humanitarian effort while conducting potentially important research seems to have impressed them and Kayla has even decided that she would like to go to graduate school for a masters before continuing on to Vet school.

So, thanks to all for your support and interest. I am expecting a few last-minute contributions to get us over the hump and propel this to a 100% successful campaign.

Best wishes from The Zone

Tim, Gabby, Kayla, Courtney, Natalia, and Jordan

About This Project

The Chernobyl disaster site has hundreds of feral dogs that are in need of care. A team of students from the University of South Carolina will work with an international team of veterinarians and animal welfare groups (CFF+) to gather scientific information concerning the health of these dogs in relation to radiation exposure. The team will spend three weeks in June, 2018, at the Chernobyl animal clinic in Ukraine gathering DNA and other measures of animal health.
