Why focus on secondary schools?

dismal

  1. While primary school is now free in many African democracies, secondary school is not. This means that students in primary school are highly unlikely to make it to secondary school because of the cost of secondary school; but it also probably affects their performance in primary school. By making secondary school more accessible, we hope to make it easier and provide incentives for households to invest in their human capital.
  2. Students in Benin must pass an exam (the BEPC) to enter secondary school. Hence, the students our project would target are the top performers already: those who are doing well but cannot afford to continue investing in their human capital.
  3. Finally, we think this technology could be the start of something much bigger. Our hope is to develop a comprehensive system that leverages information technology to hold schools accountable, by recording and publicizing school and teacher performance for example.

About This Project

An increasing number of African democracies are providing free primary education. But when it comes to secondary education, completion rates drop off dramatically. This project develops a mobile money system to pay secondary school fees in rural Benin. It lowers transaction costs, saves relatives time & money, and offers schools a fundraising tool to cover the poorest students' needs. As a result, more kids can afford to attend secondary school.
