Progress Report

We have been hard at work on the Timing and Total Protein study, affectionately known as the “TNT Study”! We began last spring (2017) with a small group of 6 subjects, then completed 13 during the Fall semester, and a whopping 27 this Spring (2018)! All of the blood and muscle samples have now been processed and analyzed and we are beginning to run preliminary statistics on our data set. It looks like the results will be VERY interesting, so stay tuned for the follow-up!

Whey protein supplement donation from Cellucor

Schwinn bikes used for sprint interval training

Measuring out deuterium for muscle biopsy days

Preparing muscle samples for analysis

Pipetting samples into GCMS vials

Prepped muscle sample waiting to be run on the Mass Spectrometer

Happy to be loading the final batch of samples on the GCMS!

About This Project

Protein is often thought to be a workout necessity, the essential complement to every gym bag. Missing protein during the post-workout anabolic window is viewed as unfortunate, if not detrimental to one’s training goals. However, the scientific literature on this subject isn’t quite so black and white. New methods of measuring protein synthesis may challenge the high-protein paradigm among active individuals and athletes, giving rise to a more optimal diet to enhance performance.
