End of the Field Season!

Genspace Microbial Reef Project Members with Billion Oyster Project at Bush Terminal Piers Park

Hello there! We've made great progress over the past five months since we have received the grant in July.

From July to September, we have sampled water from Bush Terminal Piers Park, and extracted the DNA from the filtered samples using the Qiagen DNEasy PowerWater kit. In October we sent our DNA samples for sequencing using the NovaSeq XP with paired end sequencing. And now, WE HAVE DATA!

Just this week we got access to Ookami, an HPC environment based at Stony Brook University https://www.stonybrook.edu/ookami/ . We're very excited to analyze our dataset to gain a better understanding of the microbiome of our local oyster reef!

About This Project

This pilot project applies multi-omics to study microbial communities along our oyster reef at Bush Terminal Park. The goal is to observe changes in these communities' functional capacity due to oyster presence, and create a framework for community-led environmental DNA analysis of local waterways. In doing so, we will solidify a partnership between two community science programs with deep roots in NYC's Sunset Park, as well as New York Climate Exchange's anchor institution.

Blast off!
