The Results are in!

Hi Everyone!

I am very happy to report that the final survey ended a couple weeks ago and data collection is complete! I presented my findings to student affairs professionals last week and am sharing the powerpoint with you here! There are still many more analyses to conduct on the data set so stay tuned for future updates and the official written report! See below for a quick summary of the results. Thank you all for your support!

Summary of Main Findings:

  • Both accepted and rejected women displayed lower positive mental health

and higher depressive symptoms directly after recruitment, with the effect

being much stronger for rejected women. Because these scales asked how women

have been feeling recently, their scores directly after recruitment likely

reflect how they had been feeling during recruitment.

• Rejected women experienced a decrease in all well-being indicators

directly after recruitment, and did not return to baseline on depressive

symptoms, positive mental health or belonging to Duke 3 months later.

  • Accepted women returned to baseline on all measures 3 months later,

with the exception of happiness, which increased from baseline.

Thanks so much, Craig! I would love to get the word out there about these findings once the official report is finished. Do you have any thoughts on how best to do that?

Great work, Julie. Do you plan to share the study with any news media?

About This Project

Little research has examined how social exclusion in college affects the well-being and adjustment of young adults. My research aims to address this issue by using the sorority recruitment process to study the direct impact of rejection on college students' well-being.

If you can remember how much you wanted to fit in when you first got to
college, you can understand how important this research is. Even a dollar will help!
