Drawing some blood!We drew some blood yesterday to test out the bacteria killing assay (BKA) that I will use to test immune function. The BKA tests the ability of the blood to kill off a foreign pathogen such as E. coli. We will then look at differences in the ability of the contaminated snakes to kill off bacteria compared to a control group.

Understanding how bioavailable contaminants affect animal physiological performance, immunological functions, and disease susceptibility is crucial to our ability to predict disease outbreaks in the face of combined environmental stressors. This research will assess how chronic exposure to contamination effects an individual's ability to fight off infection and disease and to escape predation.
