Developing a conservation plan for Maui's resilient corals

Map of Maui (Hawai‘i). Numbers indicate the locations of study areas. Baseline reef surveys will cover the shallow coastal waters near urban areas, as well as shallow reef pools. .

This research project involves collaboration with local stakeholders, technical experts and resource managers. Their guidance and feedback will be solicited at each stage of the planning process, which includes reef restoration, management strategies, and identification of appropriate approaches to assess the condition of urbanized coral reefs.

About This Project

This research focuses on coral adaptation and bleaching resistance processes to better understand reef resilience and reef decline on Maui (Hawaii). The work focuses on the identification of resilient corals folded into management options and interventions of reef restoration. Maui’s coral reefs are impacted by both local and global anthropogenic stressors and it is vital to identify individual colonies that are naturally more resilient and use them for reef restoration.
