Blue morpho in the bathroom!

Of all the places that I might expect to see a blue morpho butterfly, the men's bathroom at La Selva Biological Station definitely wasn't one of them! I'd gone to the station in search of Bagheera laselva, named for the place where it was originally collected, and a (probably carnivorous) relative of Bagheera kiplingi. After two days of intensive searching, I was unable to locate any specimens, although the rainforest was amazingly full of life. From howler monkeys to toucans to collared peccaries running just about everywhere--and even a morpho in the bathroom--I enjoyed every minute of my stay. Fortunately, I had a lot more luck finding spiders at Palo Verde Biological Station, where they also have baby crocodiles.

About This Project

The spider Bagheera kiplingi is 90% vegetarian in Mexico, and 60% vegetarian in Costa Rica. I will test if population density causes this difference by documenting population density of spiders in both countries and artificially increasing the number of spiders per plant in Costa Rica to compare with results in Mexico. In Panama, I will video record and collect samples of Frigga crocuta, which exhibits similar habits to B. kiplingi and might also be vegetarian.
