Hello everyone!

I am posting a lab note to explain a bit what has been going on: due to problems in finding a place to host the project, I have been developping a mycology lab along with my friend and collegue Jessica Kate Dias, to carry out this research on textile biodegradation and mycelium materials. During this time, I could not carry research but I had plenty of time to learn more about the subject, write better protocols, learn all the administrative and logistic work behind lab creation, and I am now ready to start the science with quality equipement like a laminar flow hood, incubators, agitators, precision scale, pressure cookers for sterilization, fridge and adequate glassware!

New lab space

Stay tuned, experiment results are coming very soon !

About This Project

Can textile waste be repurposed and recycled as a raw material for the growth of mycelium leathers? Textile waste is accumulating in landfills due to overcunsumption of garments and poor recycling opportunities. Textile biodegradation by various fungal strains (Pleurotus ostreatus, Schyzophyllium comune and Omphalatus nidiformis) will be assessed to find the most efficient strain to biodegrade denim and synthetic textile waste, and which is best for myco-leather production.

Blast off!
