Some more survival data

Well, the calorie restriction experiments we have going have yielded some data. Resveratrol and Nutraceutical-X have about the same effect as a 50% reduction in calorie intake. For those of you who like statistics, the P-value for the calorie restriction experiment relative to the control group is 0.0000101.

Some history: Dietary Restriction experiments were performed in these fish back in 2009 (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19302373) but this was more of a starvation experiment with the fish fed one day and then fasted the next. This is real calorie restriction with the fish fed about 50% less calories every day than control fish. We want to try a 1/4 calorie does and see what happens as there was no reduction in size or growth of these fish (and they seem to spawn just as well as the controls as well). One interesting thing from the 2009 paper (which wasn't reported on extensively) was that the dietary restricted fish had fewer tumors than control fish.

We really need to get these reagents to figure out what is going on in these fish and whether these results are relevant to human beings!

About This Project

Can a cheap, over the counter pill, prevent the onset of ageing-related diseases and extend lifespan? I use the short-lived fish (9 to 12 weeks), Nothobranchius furzeri , as a model organism to test compounds for lifespan altering affects. Using my fish to quickly identify candidate supplements would save time in testing the different compounds on long-lived (3 years) mice and rats ; and instead research can quickly proceed to human trials.
Blast off!
