Introducing Lucas Rodriguez Forti

All my life I liked toad faces.. They are always smiling. But, as a scientist I became interested in their calls. Today I have been trying different scientific approachs to raise information for conservation purposes.

Hi Graham. Thanks for the question. Many species of frogs have a complex repertoire of calls. But the main call, named as "advertisement call", is species-specific (each species present your own call pattern). The advertisement call is an acoustic signal produced by males to attract cospecific females for reproduction, then it is a sexual signal involved with recognition of members from the same species. For this reason, we (researchers) take advantage of this characteristics as a diagnosis to separete different species.

Are toad calls unique to each species or do several species share the same vocalisation?

About This Project

Frogs make adjustments in their calls according to social context and air temperature. These factors are relatively well known, but studies documenting changes in acoustic traits by pathogen infection are incipient. Our project will try to understand if fungal infected Neotropical frogs present alterations on acoustic traits in their calls. Understanding the effects of this emerging pathogen on frogs’ behavior is essential for the conservation of many endangered species across the planet.
