We made it!!

Thanks to all of our backers we reached our goal of $2500 in just a week! We cannot believe how quickly this has all happened, and we're totally humbled by the support we've gotten from all of you.

We want to thank everyone who has spread the word about us, from people who tweeted, blogged, interviewed, instagramed, or posted a facebook status about us.  Without all of your help we never would have made it so far so soon!

We've also really been enjoying talking to you guys via comments and email about our work! There's nothing scientists love more than talking about their research :)

We're so relieved that we can keep the squid room running for a while, but we'd like to keep the funding secured for longer if we can, so we set a reach goal of $5,000.  The more funding we have the longer we can keep our science going and the more advanced experiments we can do!  I'll be posting a lab note explaining those experiments soon.

About This Project

The Hawaiian Bobtail squid has a glowing bacterium that lives in a specialized organ on their underside. As the squid swims at night, the bacteria glow, preventing predators from detecting the squid's silhouette against the moonlight. Squid immune cells are able to distinguish beneficial from harmful bacteria and know to kill only harmful bacteria. Our lab researches how the immune system makes this decision.
Blast off!
