Introduction to Nålbindning

Hello! This is a short introduction into what "Viking knitting" or nålbindning is. In short, it is tying loops of yarn together to make a small item. In reality, it is a very detailed technique that has exponential variations, as it was originally only oral tradition and was not written down until recently. I do not want to give history, but to compare modern double needle knitting with nålbindning.

Basic Technology needed:

Knitting: A pair of long, straight knitting needles with a flat piece on the end opposite a pointed end. There are variations, but this is the basic technology needed.

Nalbindning: A single flat needle with a large eye opposite a pointed end. There are variations, but this is basically what technology is needed.

Another stark difference is the yarn. Knitting works a continuous line of yarn, while nålbinding works in short lengths of yarn.

For the technique:

Here is a short video introducing knitting and a short video introducing nålbindning is here.

I hope this helps to understand the difference!

Thanks Lindsey! I watched two of the videos that came up from your link and they answered many of my questions. I've always hated joining the ends of the lengths but I see now that I can remove the piece from my thumb without causing too much confusion. I plan to try it again tonight when I get home. It's fascinating to me to think of people being so creative as to come up with this technique and make beautiful garments and solve problems at the same time. Have a wonderful day! Kate

About This Project

“Viking knitting” or nålbinding was a technique used by Vikings to make small textiles such as gloves, hats, and coin purses. As the Vikings made their way through Scandinavia, so did nålbinding. My project will examine the nålbinding textiles that were recovered with the 17th-century Swedish warship, Vasa. We will catalogue, and compare them to other samples throughout Scandinavia. These textiles give a glimpse into the changing techniques from nålbinding to "modern" knitting.
