Following a big uptick in activity over the past few days, last night we crossed the halfway mark! We have a fair bit more to pull in over the next eleven days but I am feeling more confident than ever that we can turn this fossil dream into a living scientific reality!
In the coming days we plan to post more fun facts about the study area, the history, and the critters we hope to find, like our friend the ichthyosaur Toretocnemus up there. So stay tuned and continue to spread the word. Thanks so much!

Rediscovering the Lost Triassic Marine Reptile Fossils of Northern California

More than 100 years ago, paleontologists discovered the skeletons of ancient ocean-dwelling reptiles in the mountains of northern California. These fossils, including fish-shaped ichthyosaurs and lizard like thalattosaurs, provide a glimpse into the Triassic oceans of some 230 million years ago. This region has not been explored for new fossils in over a century. By relocating important sites and discovering new fossils we hope to shed light on a pivotal period in the history of life on Earth.
