Just 12 days post inoculation

Thank you to everyone who has supported this campaign! We are so glad we got enough pledges to cover our budget, even with a few days left to go!

As a quick update (for the mycelial growth side of things), the Fomes fomentarius really is growing much more quickly than we expected. It even likes the wood chips that smell like pine (unlike our previous experience with the shiitake)! Check it out!

For today, just the overgrown edges were pushed back...

after the 'push back' for the 'flowers'

a large piece of the overgrown mycelia was also put on a new plate

Extra water was poured into the boxes, to keep humidity high. We'll have another look on Tuesday, when we might go for the big flip. We will also show you the latest puffy origami heart forms (two stuffed with birch shavings, that the Fomitopsis betulina should love...).

We will definitely start with a mycelial growth workshop, on 22April, as we need to order metagenomics supplies, as discussed previously. =)

Thanks again for your support!

guess the bug wasn't entirely fixed - hoping the pictures will be right side up soon (esp the last one!) =)

About This Project

Of the millions of fungal species, less than 150,000 are known. At our community lab, Hackuarium, we have already used DNA sequencing analyses in several projects (eg. BeerDeCoded, OpenFoodRepo DNA) and have begun to apply these methods to investigate fungal biodiversity. Now, with our mushroom expert, Yngvar, we propose further metagenomic analyses, and to also explore mycelial feeding to honey bees in the context of another lab project, BeeMoS, to possibly protect them from pathogens.

Blast off!
