Elasticity Maps

Collagen Fibril Elasticity Map

One of the novel aspects of our project is the production of elasticity maps. The image above is an example of a processed data set in which you can see the distribution of mechanical properties. This is in a normal collagen fibril which is why the distribution is relatively uniform across the fibril. We expect to see more fluctuation in mechanical properties after spaceflight.

About This Project

We are actively trying to figure out if space flight affects mouse tendon in terms of stiffness and strength. We are using animal samples granted from NASA which has been exposed to the harsh environment of 0 gravity and measuring force data through atomic force microscopy. This can better prevent astronauts from injury on prolonged missions in space, such as the voyage to Mars!
