8June23 update

Big discussions are planned tomorrow with Yngvar and Olivier around the details of the BeeMoS workshop, projected still for 16July, but to be confirmed.

The 'fruit bowl' biostructure (mycelia and cardboard) production is virtually complete (but maybe just being given a couple more weeks - we will see =). We have taken one big 'flower' out of its form at least, and it is much more sturdy than anticipated. Full penetration of the cardboard and filling of gaps isn't sufficient, however.

This used up much of the remaining cardboard and grain spawn from the 22 April workshop

We think the Fomes fomentarius is more efficient, and are trying it on its preferred poplar now. Hearts and flowers in the red silicon are already inoculated, and a big bag ready for tomorrow...

Yngvar brought this poplar sawdust from Italy. We added water including 2.5mM MgSO4, to aim for about 60% moisture content, prior to sterilisation under pressure.

Louis and I might try to also make a big wall from another bag of black oyster grain spawn from Floyd. The thing that is interesting is that it might fruit in the cold... =)

About This Project

Of the millions of fungal species, less than 150,000 are known. At our community lab, Hackuarium, we have already used DNA sequencing analyses in several projects (eg. BeerDeCoded, OpenFoodRepo DNA) and have begun to apply these methods to investigate fungal biodiversity. Now, with our mushroom expert, Yngvar, we propose further metagenomic analyses, and to also explore mycelial feeding to honey bees in the context of another lab project, BeeMoS, to possibly protect them from pathogens.

Blast off!
