360 camera "dry" test run

As we started planning for this project there were a few different ideas for camera locations that were being thrown around. What better way to test them but to do a "dry" run on land before we are underwater trying to figure this out! In the folowing 360 video, myself and Dakota are in a local park testing out the project area and visible distance of our 360 cameras! We decided on the attached diagram, Figure 1, for camera location and distance from this footage. Go take a look and let us know what you think.

Figure 1. A 2D model illustrating the dive area as well as the location of divers and cameras relative to the area. The following elements for the model include: (a) a dotted line indicating the dive path, (b) a solid line indicating the radius from center of the dive area, (c) two triangles indicating the divers, and (d) four dots indicating locations of 360° cameras.

About This Project

The Poor Knights Islands, New Zealand reef communities have been exposed to warmer than average temperatures over the past 30 years. Dramatic changes in temperature stress coral, making them more susceptible to diseases and invasive species. The goal of this project is to identify the coral, diseases and invasive species present and the maturity stages at sites throughout the Islands. This will allow us to add knowledge about the state of the reef and compare them to other global ecosystems.

Blast off!
