58% of the way there!

To everyone who has supported us this far, I am eternally grateful. I thought I would take this opportunity to share a little bit of our work with you. Thus far we have isolated DNA and identified over 100 parasites from various marine mammals including harbor seals, gray seals, harp seals, sea lions, humpback whales, sei whales, fin whales, dolphins, and porpoises. We have found many many species of parasites, most of which are already known. However we have found one unidentifiable parasite from a porpoise, probably belonging to the strongyloides family of worm. We have much more sequencing to do, but we may have a new species of parasite!!!

Again thank you for all your support!

About This Project

The goal of this research is to identify parasitic infections in marine mammals like seals, whales, and dolphins. We hope to aid in diagnosis and treatment of these infections using DNA sequences. Molecular biological techniques will allow us to monitor these infections.
Blast off!
