Budget Update

Dear project backers,

Thank you so much for your support of our project! It is much appreciated. I'd like to update you on a few changes we've made to our budget due to some unforeseen circumstances on the ground. The boat we were planning on using is no longer available due to mandatory inspection in Havana. Nonetheless, our project can still happen, however we will need to rent a boat at US$80 a day. As you can imagine, purchasing a boat or bringing an inflatable from the US is not an option in Cuba! For this reason we have decided to remove the sonar transducer from the budget and instead will use one provided by my adviser's (DGS) lab. I will be applying to a separate external grant to help cover the new costs involved in the boat rental. Once again I thank you for your contribution so far, those funds will play a vital role in the success of this project.

Only 18 more days to go. Every penny counts!

Mindy

About This Project

The Caribbean manatee, a subspecies of the West Indian manatee, inhabits coastal tropical waters of Latin America and the Caribbean. Habitat use is poorly studied in most of this range, including the Cuban archipelago, which contains the largest coastal habitat in the Caribbean. Our study is based in the Isla de La Juventud, south of the the main island of Cuba. Since manatees in this area live in dark water with poor visibility, we are using side-scan sonar to characterize the habitat.
